[FLAGS]. 38-star American parade flag with triple medallion pattern. Ca 1876-1890.
13 3/4 x 23 in. flag printed on glazed linen, the 38 stars arranged in an off-balance triple medallion or global configuration with a star in upper left and lower left corner.
The global medallion pattern was one of the most popular produced by flagmakers during the centennial period.
The 38-star flag was introduced on 1 August 1876 when Colorado became the 38th state, just 28 days after the official centennial celebration. The flag remained at 38 stars until the addition of five states in 1889.
